Traffic pattern in 3D

Crewed aircraft fly a box around the runway: upwind, crosswind, downwind, base and final, about 1,000 ft above the ground. Set the wind, pick left or right traffic, and watch a training plane fly it with its radio calls. Then drop your drone and see where you'd be in its way.

What you're seeing

Each card ties one test idea to something you can change above.

The five legs

Upwind/departure: climbing out along the runway. Crosswind: a 90° turn. Downwind: parallel to the runway, going the opposite way, at pattern altitude. Base: turning back toward the runway. Final: lined up and descending to land.

Use Chase plane and watch the leg chip change.

Pattern altitude

Typically 1,000 ft above the airport for light aircraft (check the Chart Supplement for TPA). Aircraft are lowest on base, final and the climb-out, which is right where drones at 400 ft are most likely to meet them.

Put your drone under final, then under downwind.

Left vs right traffic

Turns are to the left unless the airport says otherwise. Right traffic is shown by the segmented circle's traffic pattern indicators and in the Chart Supplement ("Rgt tfc").

Switch to Right traffic and look at the L-shaped indicators.

Wind picks the runway

Aircraft take off and land into the wind. Runway numbers are the magnetic heading rounded to tens: runway 31 points about 310°. With a 290° wind, runway 31 has a headwind and a small crosswind.

Swing the wind around to the southeast.

Entering and radio calls

The recommended entry is 45° to the downwind leg at midfield, at pattern altitude. At non-towered airports pilots self-announce on the CTAF, naming the airport at the start and end of each call.

Read the radio log as the trainer goes around.

Where drones fit

Part 107.43 says you may not interfere with airport operations or traffic patterns. Stay clear of approach and departure paths, give way to crewed aircraft, and listen to the CTAF. Class D needs LAANC or FAA authorization.

Switch to Towered and see what changes.
